Configuring RemoteIt Services

You can use the Remote.it Web Portal, Desktop application or Mobile Application. This means you can manage services without a local connection to the device or having to connect to the device's console.

In all cases, this assumes you have installed RemoteIt on the device itself.

Edit Existing Service
  1. Sign in to your account.

  2. In the Devices list, select the device that hosts the service you want to edit.

  3. In the center panel, click on the name of the service you wish to modify.

  4. In the right panel, click on "Service Configuration" above the service details.

  5. Make the necessary changes:

    • Service Type: Choose the appropriate application type (e.g., SSH, VNC, HTTP).

    • Service Host Address: Specify the host address (default is 127.0.0.1 for services running locally) otherwise enter the LAN address if you are configuring jump services.

    • Service Port: Enter the port number the service uses (e.g., 22 for SSH).

    • Enable Service: Toggle the service on or off. If off, it will need to be enabled before connections can be supported to this service.

  6. After editing, click the blue "Save" button at the bottom to apply your changes.

🛠️ Additional Notes

  • Permissions: You can only edit a service if you own the device or have manage permissions on it.

  • Connection Defaults: You can set defaults for connections, such as routing mode (e.g., peer-to-peer with proxy failover) and URL templates for HTTP/HTTPS services.

  • Deleting a Service: To remove a service, click on the service, then click on the three dots in the upper right pane and select "Delete Service". (support.remote.it)

Add VNC or Remote Desktop (RDP) Service

Ensure the computer does not go to sleep by adjusting the power settings.

Linux: Install a VNC server like tightvncserver or tigervnc.

Start the VNC server and note the display number (e.g., :1), which corresponds to port 5901

macOS: Enable Screen Sharing in System Preferences > Sharing.

Windows: Enable "Allow remote access" for RDP or install a VNC server such as RealVNC or TightVNC and configure it to accept connections. Note: some versions of Windows do not allow Remote Desktop connections. Check Microsoft documentation for directions and versions.

  5. Connection Defaults: You can set defaults for connections, such as which program to launch when you are using the Remote. It Desktop application.

If you would like to create connections from your computer which will be consistent from day to day, please install the Remote. It Desktop application.
These connections are not shareable but they do allow bookmarking for a single user and will re-connect on demand as long as you do not quit the Desktop App or close the connection.

Note that when you make a connection on the Web Portal, the connection is a proxy and will close in 15 minutes if there is inactivity or after 8 hours, whichever comes first. After a connection closes, then it will require you to start a new connection which will give you a new url and port.
