There are two primary ways to use remote.it Connections when using the Desktop application. Making connections to the same devices over and over is a good candidate for using On-Demand Connections, while occasional connections to a large number of devices are more easily handled by launching from the Desktop.
This is how you will probably get started using remote.it Connections.
Select a Device and Service, then click on "add to Network".
If the Service has been configured to use a launch command, you can click on the "Launch" arrow as shown:
The corresponding web page or configured application will launch using the displayed command line.
If you have not configured a launch application, you can also copy the hostname and port in different combinations depending on the icon you click on. These options make it easy to copy and paste the connection address into various third party applications, for example PuTTY:
Copy Address copies the connection address as hostname:port to the clipboard.
Copy Hostname copies the connection hostname to the clipboard.
Copy Port copies the connection port to the clipboard.
Auto Launch changes the action of the button to "Add to Network and Launch" and launches the configured application or URL with the connection address as a command line argument after the Connection is established.
On-demand Connections let you set up a connection address using the remoteit Desktop initially. You then copy and paste the connection hostname and port into your connectivity application, such as Remote Desktop Connection, FileZilla, various VNC Viewers, web browsers, etc. You can then save or "bookmark" this connection address so that it stays available in your application.
You'll want to make sure that the Service's "Auto-Launch" setting is disabled.
As when launching from the remoteit Desktop, select a Device and Service, then click on "add to Network".
Initially, you will have to configure a bookmark in your application using the remote.it Connection's hostname and port. You can copy the hostname and port in different combinations depending on the icon you click on. These options make it easy to copy and paste the connection address into various third party applications, for example PuTTY:
Copy Address copies the connection address as hostname:port to the clipboard.
Copy Hostname copies the connection hostname to the clipboard.
Copy Port copies the connection port to the clipboard.
As long as the connection is in your remoteit Network, then you can activate the connection by simply connecting to it using your connectivity application rather than launching the application from the remote.it Desktop. If the Connection is not already active, it may take 5 to 10 seconds to start up.
If you use the "Named Connections" option (under "More... Settings") then your connection address will be given, by default, a hostname which is built from the Device and Service names.
Now, the connection hostname looks like this instead of 127.0.0.1.
You can change this connection name if you wish by editing the "Connection Name" under the Service's "Configuration" panel.
