Installing remoteit on a Raspberry Pi running Raspbian or Raspberry Pi OS

Please note that this section describes a software package which has been superseded. We do not recommend the use of remoteit 3.x for new designs.  For instructions on downloading and installing the most recent device package, please follow this link.

If you are using Raspbian/Raspberry Pi OS Buster or later (32 or 64 bit versions), follow the instructions below. Raspbian Buster was released in June 2020.

If you need to update your remoteit package using a remoteit connection, for example using SSH or VNC, please see: Updating the remoteit or connectd packages using a SSH connection . Failure to follow this procedure will result in loss of connection and inability to restore it without rebooting or accessing the device directly.

If you are using an earlier version of Raspbian, or a Debian-based OS for Raspberry Pi which is not Raspbian, such as Ubuntu Mate, please follow the directions here .

Installing the remoteit package

The following instructions assume you have access to a command line on your Pi (using a keyboard and monitor, or over your LAN using SSH) as well as having established a network connection, either using Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

On the Raspberry Pi command line, type or copy and paste the following commands and press the "Enter" key.

sudo apt update
sudo apt install remoteit

Each of these commands will take less than a minute to complete as they download required files.

Success - now configure your Device with
When the process is done, you will see this message displayed confirming that the remoteit package has been installed.   The details of alternate connection addresses will depend on your network.
Continue your device configuration at
or http://raspberrypi.local:29999

Go to a browser and type into the URL bar and hit the "Enter" key.

  • If you're using the Pi's GUI directly, you can use the Pi's browser.

  • If you're connected to the Pi using SSH over the LAN, you can copy the URL to a browser on your local PC.

Now you can access the remoteit web Admin Panel following the instructions here .

If does not work, try one of the alternate addresses shown when the installation completed.

Updating the remoteit package

We recommend connecting locally, if possible, when updating existing devices.

When upgrading a remote system, you should use the following command:

nohup sudo apt install remoteit &
to force the upgrade in the background. You may be disconnected during the upgrade, but will be able to reconnect afterwards. The output of the upgrade process will be saved in nohup.out.
Upgrading from connectd to remoteit

You can install the remoteit Raspbian package over a previous installation of the older connectd package, version 2.4.26 or later. Your services and startup scripts will be converted automatically.

Upgrading over connectd ONLY works for Services registered using connectd_installer or connectd_register . Do NOT install remoteit over connectd if you have registered Services using Bulk or Auto Registration.
